The remote and frigid Firth
River, the centrepiece of the park, is navigable
for only the 130 kilometres between Lake Margaret,
where there is floatplane access, and Nanaluk
Spit on the Beauport Sea. About 100 people each
summer come to enjoy white water rafting, some
to brave the class III and IV rapids, strong
eddies and 45 kilometres of canyon where only
limited rescue assistance is possible. Class
IV rafting is suitable only for advanced paddlers
in closed canoes and white water boats. Possibly
Canada's first watercourse, since it was
not formed by glaciation, it cuts across a landscape
of breathtaking beauty and exceptional diversity.
Traveling the river is an ideal way to observe
wildlife in a natural habitat, experience 24-hour
daylight and find, in the exposed rock of canyon
walls, the fossilized remains of warm-water
animals trapped in layers of shale and limestone
formed between 580 and 380 million years ago.
