Great concentrations of a
wide variety of bird species makes Point Pelee
National Park the park the birds built.
Over the last 100 years, 347 bird species have
been recorded - almost 100 species nest
here and about 50 remain over the winter. After
flying perhaps hundreds of kilometres in one
night, the 50 kilometres over the expanse of
Lake Erie on their northward migration leave
the birds exhausted. They often virtually tumble
onto the mainland - tiny wind-swept Point
Pelee. Dead trees provide nesting sites for
tree swallows, wrens, wood ducks, woodpeckers,
Great Horned Owls and the much-fancied Prothonotary
Warbler. In the fields, meadowlarks, field sparrows,
Rufous-sided Towhees, Yellow-breasted Chat,
Wood Pee-Wees, Red-eyed Vireos and Yellow-billed
Cuckoos can be seen. The beaches are host to
gulls, crows and grackles. Of the truly rare
species that draw thousands of birders to the
park each year, the Virginia Warbler, Lesser
Nighthawk, Swallow-tailed Kite, Sage Thrasher
and CassinŽs Sparrow are among the most desirable
sightings possible.
