The land base of the peninsula
is only about 1,000 years old. It has a sand
and gravel base, with some topsoil to support
woodlands and some grassland. Due to the lake
effect — exposure to the lake, currents
and wind — the land is constantly changing,
especially at its delicate extremities. The
Canadian Carolinian Zone stays much warmer throughout
the winter than other inland zones at the same
latitude. Marshes on the peninsula make up one
of the largest remaining wetland areas in southern
Canada, giving it international significance.
The 20 kilometres of beach framing marsh, forest
and grasslands are the harshest and most changeable
of all the habitats. At times flat, wide and
clear, the beach becomes steep and narrow after
a storm that sends waves crashing over it, changing
its shape, width and slope, and leaving it awash
with flotsam.
